Our mission supports and incentivizes improved student outcomes related to poetry that are already a goal for 7th grade classrooms. The Common Core State Standards Initiative will unite 7th grade classrooms with a core curriculum for language arts, including achievements in poetry reading and writing. As we come across articles, links, lessons and suggestions that may be useful to share with language arts/communications

This is a list of poems selected for 7th graders to review. Included on this page is a list of poetic forms for different styles of poetry, consisting of a description for each form and example poems. A poetry glossary is also available to help students better understand poetic structure.

Poet: Lady Kathleen
Lady Kathleen writes poetry on a variety of subjects and in many different styles. This site offers a wide selection of her poems, completed with descriptions of poetry line terms, poetry meters, styles of poetry and types of rhymes.
TED - Billy Collins: Everyday moments, caught in time
Billy Collins (former U.S. Poet Laureate) shares a project in which several of his poems were turned into short animated films. This video features an interactive view of poetry.

T&WC seeks to educate the imagination by offering innovative creative writing programs for students and teachers, and by providing a variety of publications and resources to support learning through the literary arts. A Resources page is available that offers different practices and insights about teaching imaginative writing.
The Poetry Foundation
This website offers an archive of poetry that can be organized by poems or by poets. There is also a Learning Lab available on the Resources page that encourages more in-depth interactions and discussions about poetry from students in the classroom.
How to Write Poetry
This website clearly illustrates techniques on how to properly write various styles of poetry. This helps students to be able to write in the kind of style they prefer while teaching them about poetry in general and about specific styles of poetry. Example poems are given.
PBS News Hour
This website provides information about the activity of established poets and enables students to learn about poetry in current events. By clicking on “Teacher Resources” multiple other resources become readily available.
